Precautions for using fasteners in summer

Summer is a high incidence period for fastener failure, anchor detachment, and bolt loosening. During hot and rainy weather, problems such as bolt rusting, decreased anchoring force, and loose connections are frequent. And most of the failure problems are not caused by weather conditions, but by timed lightning planted by human error. High temperature and humidity are only amplifying conditions, and non-standard storage, construction, and installation habits are the root cause of hidden dangers. In response to high temperature and high humidity summer working conditions, several common, easily overlooked, and highly hazardous erroneous operations directly affect work acceptance and construction safety.
Irregular storage
1. Storage
It is prohibited to store in the open air, and it is strictly forbidden to expose to high temperatures, rain, or directly land on the ground. In the alternating environment of high temperature and high humidity in summer, a condensation water film will continue to form on the surface of metal fasteners, and ordinary galvanized layers and rust proof oil layers will quickly fail; Bolt/expansion screw: Slight rust on the surface enters the thread gap, and later rust expands, causing a decrease in pulling force. The warehouse should be kept ventilated and dry, with pallets elevated and covered with rain and moisture in damp environments.
2. Requisition
On site material requisition should follow the principle of small quantities and multiple times to prevent exposure to sunlight and moisture all day long.
II No cleaning inspection before installation
1. The base surface is damp and not treated
After rain, the base surface is damp, with accumulated water and mud, and anchoring construction is prohibited. The porosity of wet concrete increases, the surface strength decreases, and the wet pore walls cannot form effective extrusion friction force; At the same time, moisture remains in the anchoring gap, causing long-term corrosion and accelerating the corrosion of fasteners.
Wet base surfaces must be dried, air dried, and cleaned of debris. Any anchoring operations are strictly prohibited if the accumulated water is not cleaned and the base surface is not completely dry; Before resuming work after rain, priority should be given to inspecting the pull-out performance of anchor components in the early stage.
2. Do not inspect the product
Inspect bolt threads for hidden rust spots in high temperature and high humidity environments. If there is floating rust or rust spots, it is prohibited to polish and remove rust and continue to use it on the stressed parts; Corrosion can form stress concentration sources, increasing the risk of failure.
3. Not paying attention to the substrate
In summer, the surface of high-temperature concrete dehydrates, causing local sanding and looseness. Anchor bolts are prohibited in this area and should be replaced. It is recommended to increase the proportion of sampling and pull-out testing for anchoring points during summer construction; Before resuming work after rain, priority should be given to reviewing the anchoring points in the early stage.
III High temperature rush work and violent fastening
1. At high noon temperatures, try to minimize continuous high-intensity nailing. Nail guns should operate continuously in summer, and after each certain amount of nailing, stop the machine to cool down and clean the gun chamber residue. Moisture in the residue will exacerbate gun jamming and firing failures. After rainy days, dry and maintain the tools to prevent internal rusting and sticking.
2. In high-temperature environments, the coefficient of thermal expansion and contraction of steel increases, and high-strength bolts have a clear yield torque range. Overtightening can directly cause plastic deformation of threads, necking of bolts, and micro cracks. In areas with large temperature differences between day and night, excessive tightening during the day and contraction during the night can accelerate bolt fatigue fracture due to repeated alternating stress. Violent over tightening is strictly prohibited. Use a torque wrench and tighten diagonally in stages according to the designed torque. Torque wrenches should be protected from direct sunlight and regularly calibrated.
3. For bolts installed outdoors, anti rust coating can be applied to the exposed parts after installation to avoid corrosion caused by frequent rainfall in summer.
The high temperature and high humidity environment amplifies all the hidden dangers of non-standard operations. Outdoor stacking, wet surface construction, violent fastening, reuse of rust parts, and tool overheating operations, seemingly effortless operations, are quietly laying major hidden dangers of loosening, detachment, and fracture for the project. The core of preventing “overturning” during summer construction is to manage storage, base surface, torque, old materials, and high-temperature operations.
