Spring nuts, also known as speed nuts or captive nuts, are used to provide a threaded anchor point in sheet metal orother thin materials. To use a spring nut, first, you need to insert it into the pre-drilled hole in the material. Then, as youstart to tighten the bolt, the spring-loaded “fingers” on the nut will compress and grip the material from behindcreating a secure connection without the need for a separate tool to hold the nut in place. This makes spring nutsparticularly useful in situations where access to the backside of the material is limited or impractical.
